Johns Hopkins Health System built a $400 million, 12-story research tower at its East Baltimore medical campus to be opened by the spring of 2023. Part of the research tower replaced the Brady Building, a seven-story structure that was demolished in 2021 to make way for the new project. Additional research space was created by renovating the Children’s Medical and Surgical Center (CMSC) building, a 1964 structure that has most recently housed labs and offices. The combined project will have 440,770 SF of new and renovated space, including 200,000 SF of research labs and related areas.

Hillis-Carnes provided Third-Party Construction Testing and Inspection Services. The scope of work included the testing and inspections of fill placement, utilities, spread footings, underpinning, waterproofing, cast-in-place concrete, reinforcing steel, floor flatness and levelness, structural steel, light-gauge framing, sprayed fireproofing, metal decks, structural load-bearing masonry, and pavement. Hillis-Carnes provided a geotechnical and materials engineer to review, analyze, compile, and evaluate test results in addition to providing technical recommendations when needed.
