From the fall of 2018 until December 2020, the National Park Service (NPS) completely rehabilitated the Arlington Memorial Bridge for the first time since it opened in 1932. The $227 million rehabilitation project, one of NPS’s most significant infrastructure projects, will extend the bridge’s useful life by 75 years. The entire bridge deck was replaced, as well as repairs to concrete arches and stone facades.

Hillis-Carnes was contracted to provide the quality assurance portion of the construction materials testing and inspection services for the resurfacing and repairs to the bridge. The scope of services included the testing of soils, cast-in-place concrete for shoring, slabs, miscellaneous site work concrete, and specialty concrete.

Quality Assurance Inspections were conducted according to requirements and approved shop QC practices. Hillis-Carnes provided a geotechnical and materials engineer to review, analyze, compile, and evaluate test results, in addition to providing technical recommendations when needed.
